Guest Speaker Reflection: Samoan Women’s Conference inspires a ‘Heart for Service’

Kim Moffitt

On August 16, I had the honour of being a guest speaker at the Samoan Women's Conference held at Carrum Downs Church. As the theme was 'Heart for Service', I shared my volunteer experience with the Restore One School in Cambodia and the recent mission trip with my church.

Despite the cold weather, the warmth I felt upon entering was undeniable. I was met with a beautiful sea of purple as the ladies from various churches wore uniforms; even more heart-warming was seeing young girls dressed in the same uniform, participating in the program.  It reminded me of the verse in Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it."— Ladies, may I encourage you to take your young girls to women's conferences and church events. They are the future of our church, and it's our responsibility to lead by Christ's example.

The worship was heavenly, with harmonies, powerful voices, and a Spirit-filled atmosphere. I sang along, imagining what it would be like to sing in the heavenly choir with angels. The special musical items from church choirs across Melbourne were not only uplifting but deeply inspiring.

When it was time to speak, I recounted the stories of children and families in one of the poorest villages in Thom Prom Province. What a privilege it was to serve, to make a small difference, and to experience the joy of giving first-hand.

I encouraged the ladies to find their passion, whatever the cause may be, and to "Go out and use your time, talents, and treasure to serve one another in love" just as Jesus did.

Thank you for the opportunity to share what's close to my heart and my journey of serving with the Restore One School in Cambodia. My biggest takeaway from this beautifully organised Women's Day was this: What more can we do as a Church community to be the hands and feet of Jesus?

May God continue to bless the Samoan Women's Ministry as they faithfully serve both the Church and their community.
